Golden Apple Comics is a very well known and much beloved comic book shop located in the beating heart of downtown Los Angeles. Known as the “Comic Shop to the Stars,” they were founded in 1979 and have pretty much exploded in popularity ever since, most famously for their creator signings and events including heavy hitters like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Jim Lee, and Todd McFarlane among many many more!
Today, they run both the classic brick and mortar business as well as a convenient online shop. You can even follow them on Instagram for their latest releases. And now (thanks to a certain dynamo worldbuilding duo) they even exist in virtual reality!
We were connected to Golden Apple project through working with the group Big Rock Creative, best known for producing the annual Burning Man-sanctioned virtual festival known as BRCvr held in AltspaceVR. We had previously worked with Big Rock Creative for the virtual burn itself along with a a handful of other influential VR experiences. They had a previous relationship with the shop owners and had partnered to create the Golden Apple VR experience. That’s when we were called in!

With this project our scope was to replicate the interior of their brick and mortar shop as close to reality as possible then install a “portal” in the back which transports patrons to an original and fantastical promenade, visually representative of the Anaheim Convention Center in California, where they could host live events and creator talks. Click the button below to see more previews of the space plus learn more about how we approached our tasks.
