Wait… What Exactly Is Happening Here?
A REAL LIFE PARTY IN VIRTUAL SPACE! GET READY TO GET DOWN!
This event will be two things. First it is the inaugural launch party for a new online virtual night club known as “The Flying Saucer,” one of our own original destination worlds. The club is housed in the interior of an alien space craft and sports a retro future neon aesthetic. We will be streaming in a live house set from Mr. MetaVRse himself, LORD ALAN, all night while partygoers dance and socialize. It is 100% free to attend, no app or account or ticket needed!
Secondly it will be a grand experiment to find out if up to 300 people can actually join an online browser-based virtual 3D world together simultaneously and still have a smooth experience. Frankly we just don’t know and are very interested to find out! We have been allotted this opportunity to put our current WebXR technology through it’s paces and we intend to do so. FOR SCIENCE!
Thus you are very much invited to join in on our crazy dance party metrics experiment! Bring ALL of your friends! We want to CRASH THE LAUNCH!!
Where Is This Saucer Flying?
This is where it gets really cool, it’s 100% virtual and online! Kind of like a big social game. We have built this experience on a BabylonJS-powered platform called Frame to be accessible via most modern browsers without the need to even download an app. It feels a lot like playing a first-person PC video game except everyone else there is a real person also connected and having their own experience. You can freely walk and even fly around the space, voice chat with tons of other folks, or just get down to the DJ on our delightful dancefloor! We will have instructions on how to do these things once you connect and enter.
How Do I Beam Aboard?
This part can’t get any easier, you only need access to a Chrome-based web browser! Using a PC, Mac, iPhone, Android phone, iPad, or any WebXR-supporting VR headset… simply browse to FlyingSaucerClub.com on the date and time listed above to enter the event. Voila!
You can also RSVP on our LinkedIn Event page to be reminded (and help our algorithms!)
What Else Do I Need To Know?
⭐ While you do not need a Frame account to participate, we highly recommend you go ahead and make one. You can even use your Google account to login so you really don’t even need to make a whole new account/password. Having an actual account is nice because if you customize your avatar it will remember that and your name for the next time you reconnect. And being an experimental browser experience it is likely you will have to refresh once or twice. Having to remake your avatar multiple times will be frustrating!
⭐ A microphone is necessary if you want to chat. If you do use a mic you will also need headphones to avoid annoying feedback noise.
⭐ This is a fully spatial audio experience so headphones can also help you pinpoint the natural direction from which someone is speaking to you.
⭐ You can absolutely connect in a Quest headset however Frame’s VR experience leaves a little to be desired in terms of fidelity, movement, and general glitches. If you can do it in VR we recommend at least trying it, because it is very fun to dance under the lights! However the desktop browser version will likely be the highest quality experience visually.
⭐ There will be signs at the spawn point instructing you on how to move depending on the device you are using however for traditional PC gamers the WASD keys will by default turn you instead of strafe you. This can be annoying as it will fight with the mouse look but it can be toggled to the expected “Turn Mode” in your account profile settings. Another good reason to make a Frame account first!
⭐ You are not required to interact with anyone or do anything that you do not want to. While our event will be lightly moderated we are expecting a LOT of people… random Internet people… so the likelihood of coming across conversations or actions you are not comfortable with is there, albeit low given the visual restraints of the platform. Our best advice is to simply leave that area and find another conversation.
⭐ There is a public chat box in the world. Feel free to use it however the same warning applies to this as to conversations. We probably won’t be able to control what appears in there sometimes. Offenders can be kickbanned but they do have to offend first.
THIS IS A HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL EXPERIMENT! WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW WELL THIS WILL WORK! IT WILL BE A TEST OF FRAME’S CAPABILITIES AND IT IS VERY LIKELY YOU WILL CRASH MULTIPLE TIMES AND NEED TO REFRESH YOUR BROWSER. THIS IS EXPECTED! 🙂
